2007-sport-pony-stallion-test-287.jpg

On November 11th 2007 the four year old Connemara Pony stallion Wildwych Eclipse galloped into history when he became the first American-bred Connemara Pony stallion ever to complete and pass the most prestigious and sophisticated performance test for pony stallions in North America. It was a remarkable achievement not only for Eclipse, but also American pony breeders and Connemara Pony enthusiasts.

Wildwych Eclipse who stands barely 14.1 HH showed tremendous courage, strength and outstanding character throughout the test, earning not only outstanding scores but exceptionally high praise from all who came to know him.

Our journey with Eclipse began in late 2006 when our then three year old stallion prospect was presented for a certified breeding license with International Sport Horse Registry/Oldenburg North America Sport Pony Division. The inspection for this temporary approval took place at the equestrian park at Starr Vaughn in Elk Grove, California.  Eleven sport horse stallions were presented, among them our lone pony stallion, Wildwych Eclipse.

I can remember tears of pride watching as our 14.1 hand stallion grew two inches for every turn on the triangle; no one could have convinced Eclipse he was not 17 HH.   Eclipse’s approval was met with much applause, as Chief Executive Officer of the ISR/OLD NA, Ekkehard Brysch, named Eclipse among the best pony stallions of the 2006 tour.

The sport pony division of the ISR is chiefly the brainchild of Mr. Brysch and was instituted with the goals of producing a very special type of pony. As an un-started three year old, Eclipse’s approval was based solely on the scores he received for his conformation, quality and correctness of his gaits as well as free jumping ability.  To date, Wildwych Eclipse is one of only three pony stallions to be awarded a certified breeding license by the ISR/OLD NA Sport Pony Division since 2002.

The term “Sport Pony” connotes many singular visions of an ideal. Some proponents sing only the praises of our European counterparts, while others prefer only a certain unique individual or crossbred type. Our Wildwych Eclipse is a Connemara Pony and as such representative all of the strong, ruggedly beautiful traits, natural athleticism, high intelligence, soundness and generosity of spirit that define Native Breeds . Eclipse carries with him more than five generations of pure pony breeding and is not now–nor ever will he be–a small warmblood horse; yet his enthusiasm and talents are inestimable. Eclipse is a PONY! It was quite an honor for him to be selected for the performance test and we were surely blessed with the means to provide him with the opportunity to participate.

Bearing this in mind, the final decision to take Eclipse to the test was not made easily nor taken lightly as it meant shipping our stallion more than 2300 miles away from home. There were no guarantee’s of passing or and the possibility of serious injury or illness so far from home was frightening.   I can remember telling myself over and over again:”they chose him.”

It is important for breeders to recognize that the performance test is not a competition, but a true test for the selection of pony breeding stallions. It was not a test for Connemara Pony stallions; it was a performance test for sport pony stallions, equivalent to European pony stallion tests. The level at which pony stallions are expected to perform is above the level of a USEA recognized Novice Horse Trial.

Eclipse began preparing for the performance test - and lifetime licensing - in the spring of 2007.  Our only instruction was to insure Eclipse was fit when he arrived in Ohio – not much to go on!  With this paltry guidance in mind, now four year old Eclipse was set on a course of training that would prepare him both mentally and physically to meet the challenges of the thirty day test.

Early on it was difficult to coordinate Eclipse’s training schedule with the demands of family and the start of the competition and breeding seasons. As the wife of hardworking farrier, and mother of one singularly beautiful small child, my “in the saddle” time as well as meeting Eclipse’s breeding commitments was limited to the three hours each morning during preschool hours. Even so, by April Eclipse had attended his first Cross Country Clinic and was entered in his first USEA recognized Horse Trial. In 2007, Wildwych Eclipse placed in the top three on three occasions, and qualified for our USEA Regional Eventing Championships

It was a remarkable first season for Eclipse with wins in both Dressage, and USEA recognized horse trials. We also made our annual pilgrimage to our Regional Breed Show where Eclipse capably defended his titles. Under judges Linda Impey (UK) and Heather Sheratt (CAN), Wildwych Eclipse was awarded “Best In Show” (Connemara and Mountain & Moreland combined), Supreme Champion Connemara and claimed the ‘Custusha’s Cashel Rock’ Perpetual Trophy for the Connemara Stallion collecting the most points in both Breed and Performance classes combined.

The performance test for ponies consists of a 30 day training period and a final performance test. In North America, the pony stallion test focuses largely on evaluating the interior qualities of a stallion candidate under standardized conditions.  In addition to ride-ability, qualities such as character, temperament, soundness and willingness to work, are evaluated and scored by the training director and test riders. During the final three days of the test, an expert ground jury gives additional scores for free jumping, jumping under saddle, basic gaits, ride-ability, and cross country jumping. In order to obtain a lifetime breeding license with International Sporthorse Registry Sport Pony Division, stallions must successfully complete and pass the 30-Day Test with a score of not less than 60%.

Our four year old stallion, Wildwych Eclipse  more than met the minimum requirement, passing with a score of 71.25 %.  Eclipse earned not only exceptional  scores but also very high praise from all who came to know him.  Perhaps the highest praise coming from the training director, Helmut Schrant, who awarded Eclipse a nine for character, and eight’s for temperament, ride-ability, willingness and ability to work.

In North America, the Sport Pony Performance Test is considered ’state of the art’ for modern pony breeding programs and stallion selection. The level of expertise of the official ground jury is unparalleled in the US. The 2007 Performance Test for pony stallions, combined the expertise of training director Helmut Schrant (US), and international judges Cord Wassmann (GER),  Dieter Felgendreher (GER/US), and Gerd Zuther (GER/US). Mr. Wassmann currently serves as president of the stallion licensing commission for the Verband Hannoverscher Warmblutzuechter (Hanoverian Horse Breeders (GER)) and is instrumental in Stallion Licensing (including Pony Stallions) for the principle breed registries in Germany. Mr. Felgendreher judging assignments include: Dressage at Devon, the Canadian Sport Horse Championships, the California Breeders Futurity, and the Holstiener Mare Show Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. Mr. Zuther is an official US Dressage Federation Sport Horse Breeding Judge who conducted the North American Stallion Performance Testing from 1987 to 1995. I am proud to say that experts agree, our four year old Connemara Pony stallion Wildwych Eclipse is indeed a “VERY NICE PONY!”

Taking Eclipse to the 2007 Performance Test for Pony Stallions took commitment, it took faith and above all else a firm “belief” in the fitness, quality, and character of our pony.  Over the last three and a half years Wildwych Eclipse has taught us never to underestimate the virtues of good pony.  He exemplifies them all. Wildwych Eclipse is a vivacious character, with the will to succeed regardless of how high the bar is raised.

Successful completion of the 2007 Performance Test  for Sport Pony stallions was remarkable achievement not only for Eclipse, but also provides proof positive that American pony breeding programs are capable of producing ponies that exceed international breeding standards.

Authors Note:

The response from American Pony Breeders and Connemara Pony enthusiasts has been nothing short of overwhelming and Max and I wish thank all of you for your support and enthusiasm.  We would be remiss not to mention Mary Stewart Prewitt of Wildwych Connemaras in Elizabeth, Colorado, breeder of Wildwych Eclipse. Eclipse is the son of Wildwych’s foundation stallion Glenormiston Flurry Knox out of Wildwych Dreamtime.

Wildwych Eclipse joined our family as a weanling colt and has been produced and shown entirely by his amateur owners Max and Lisa Gerdes of Redbud Ranch in Northern California.

Test Rider Frederike Feldbush Specifically Requested to ride Four Year Old Purebred Connemara Pony Stallion Wildwych Eclipse for the Final Days of the Test which Began November 8 at Paxton Farms in Batavia, Ohio. Frederikes Family has been visiting the US for the last ten days and keep 20 horses on there farm (including a German Riding Pony Stallion) in Germany.  Mr. Feldbusch was most especially impressed with our Eclipse’s outsanding temperament, character and rideability.

Today had to be about the most exciting day we have ever spent in a lifetime of horses and ponies. The stallions were all truly spectacular as was the level of expert horsemanship and judgeing.  We of course could not be prouder of our beautiful young pony Stallion Wildwych Eclipse. Eclipse put in both an excellent dressage test as well as showed oustanding form over fences.  We have had nothing but the highest praise for our young lad and could not be prouder! Go Baby Go!

”To Date, This has been the finest group of young stallions I’ve seen in North America, The quality of the Horses and the Standard of the testing is equivalent european standards.”—–Cord Wasserman

Update: Half Way There!

Wildwych Eclipse Cross Country Jumping

Very pleased and happy to report that our four year old Connemara Pony Stallion Wildwych Eclipse continues to amaze us with his remarkable work ethic and train-ability. Training director Helmut Schrant told Max today that Eclipse continues to meet with all expectations and that he is particularly happy with Eclipse’s stadium rounds and cross country jumping. Considering character, temperament, ability and willingness to work as well as general jumping aptitude make up a large percentage of the training directors assesment (50 % of the final outcome) Eclipse appears to be on target for completing the test successfully.  We’ll keep our fingers crossed for our wonderful Irish Pony!

Sport Horse Stallion Testing, LLC (a joint venture of th ISR/OLD NA and American Hanoverian Society) just released the names of the judges and guest riders for the final testing scheduled for Nov. 8 - 10th.

The expert  judging panel will consist of Dietrich Felgendreher (US), Cord Wassmann (GER) and Gerd Zuther (US). While Dietrich Felgendreher and Cord Wassmann have been members of the judges panel for many years, Gerd Zuther will replace Manfred Lopp who recovers from a knee surgery and was not able to travel.

The guest riders this year are: Jessica J. Tate, Verena Stock and Fred Weber for dressage and Mike Patrik Leichle (Ger) and Rudy Leone for jumping.

Dietrich Felgendreher (GER) has resided in the U.S. since 1974. He and his wife, Elizabeth, have operated Holly Oak Farm in Midway, KY, since 1978 where they continue to maintain a warmblood breeding operation, a dressage training and sales stable and a U.S.D.A. licensed quarantine facility for imported horses. Mr. Felgendreher has served for numerous years on the Board of Directors and Approval Committee for the American Holsteiner Horse Association and currently serves on the Executive Board and Inspection Committee for the International Sporthorse Registry. His sporthorse judging assignments have included Dressage at Devon, the Canadaian Sporthorse Championship, the California Breeders Futurity, the Holsteiner Mare show in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, and the 100 Day Stallion Test at November Hill Farm. In 1999, Mr Felgendreher also served as a Training Director for the ISR/Oldenburg 100 Day Stallion Test conducted in Lexington, KY.

Gerd Zuther (GER) has been in the United States for more than 20 years. He is certified as an USEF-licensed dressage sporthorse breeding judge. He is a member of the American Hanoverian Society and has served on its Mare and Stallion Committee since 1985.  Gerd successfully completed the eight-year program to become a licensed riding instructor and trainer certified by the German National Federation in 1965.

Cord Wassmann (GER), president of the German Hannoverian stallion licensing commission.

 Wildwych Eclipse

I’m so thrilled and relieved and happy to share that our four year old Connemara Pony Stallion Wildwych Eclipse has successfully completed his first week of testing.  Training director Helmut Schrant shared with me that Eclipse is “fitting right in to the program.”  Considering that the pony stallions arrive well  after the the 100 day midterm presentation it would be difficult not to make at least some comparisons amongst participants.  It is such a relief to know our Pony is working well up to the Training Directors standard.  Maybe I’m a touch biased but Mr. Schrant seemed quite pleased with our Irish Pony. I could not be more proud of Eclipse both as an individual and as a representative and foundation sire for our small farm.

Today Eclipse passed his pre-test examination in preparation for the testing that begins tomorrow (October 12th 2007)

According to training director Helmut Schrant Eclipse is coming into the test well advanced in his training compared to some of the other Stallions. He was also quite surprised to learn Eclipse has been competing in open competition against horses.  Throughout Europe Adults are allowed to compete on Ponies in Pony Only Divisions.

They made it!

Very happy to report that both Max and Eclipse arrived safely and in fine spirits at Paxton Farms, last night around 8pm.  Max was met by the training director Helmut Schrant and together they put Eclipse up for the night. After a good roll in his new accomodations Eclipse settled in for a few days rest before the beginning of the Testing period.  Max reports Eclipse is very bright and alert and is both eating and drinking well.  This morning after a good nights rest Eclipse was allowed out for several hours to move around and relax after his long journey.  Eclipse has been assigned to test rider Heike Feldbusch.  She is the smallest of the test riders and is similar in size and wieght to myself.  Max also met the official test photographer Bob Tarr—Eclipse even got his picture taken!

My dearest husband Max and our beautiful pony Stallion Wildwych Eclipse left yesterday to make the 2300 mile journey across the nation to participate in the 2007 Pony Stallion Performance Test at Paxton Farms.  Four year old Eclipse is the first Connemara Stallion in the US to atempt the 30 day test for pony stallions, which until now has been the exclusive domain of popular New Forest and German Riding Ponies. If successful Eclipse will be the Youngest Pony Stallion and First Connemara Stallionto receive a lifetime breeding licence with the ISR/OLD NA Sport Pony Division.  Currently, Wildwych Eclipse is an approved (licensed) Breeding Stallion with the American Connemara Pony Society and holds a certified breeding licence with the ISR/OLD NA Sport Pony Division.

How did we get here?  In late 2006, 3 year old Wildwych Eclipse was presented, inspected and awarded a Certified Breeding Licence with the International Sport Horse Registry/ Oldenburg North America.  All North American stallion candidates (including Pony Stallions) that meet the registries criteria must be presented for physical inspection between the ages of 2.5 and 5 years (No Stallion may liscensed by foal inspection alone).

During the presentation for approval Pony Stallions are very carefully inspected and selected for correct conformation,  athletic ability and  and inner qualities such as character and trainability.  If scores on conformation, movement and jumping ability are sufficient, a certified breeding license is granted. Stallions must then either complete the 30-Day Stallion Test which evaluates their gaits, train-ability and athletic ability in dressage, show jumping and cross country, or they must demonstrate significant high level success in open competition.  Wildwych Eclipse was one of only two Pony Stallions approved in the US by the ISR/OLD NA between 2006-2007.

Having completed the physical inspection process Eclipse began preparing for the performance test in the spring of 2007.  Our only instructions were to arrive in Ohio in fit condition–not much to go on eh?   Max and I have worked hard, with myself as Eclipse’s primary rider at home and Max doing most of the away shows and cross country schooling.  We as a family have worked hard and the results are plain–Eclipse finished  the season with amazing success in dressage, show jumping and cross country.  At this point, we feel confident that Eclipse is both mentally and physically well prepared to meet the stresses and challenges provided in this next phase of the process.   We have faith that he will rise to the occasion—if anything, our Eclipse has taught us never to underestimate what a really good pony he is!

So when he is induced by a man to assume all the airs
and graces which he puts on of himself when he is showing
off voluntarily, the result is a horse that likes to be
ridden, that presents a magnificent sight, that looks alert,
that is the observed of all observers.
- Xenophon

:) How cool is that!?–We’ve been asked to submit a short paragraph about our pony stallion Wildwych Eclipse for a book which is currently in production and will be released sometime in November.  Now theres another first for team Redbud!   Wildwych Eclipse

On another note Max and his eventing machine Lucky Teddy took 6th individually at Twin Rivers International Horse Trials over this past weekend.  Max’s phenomenal run cross country helped secure a Team Win in the COTH ADULT TEAM CHALLENGE at preliminary (also helped make up for  some naughty “teddy-dressage”…yikes!)
